“Light Up Nigeria” Project in Durumi
Durumi, a residential area located in the outskirts of Abuja – Nigeria’s capital – has around 1 Million inhabitants. This suburb had never been connected to a grid and was therefore plunged into total darkness every day.

The context
Durumi has been shortlisted as part of the «Light Up Nigeria» program which aims to bring light in certain areas of the country and foster local development, both from an economic and social perspective. Another objective was to provide more safety in neighbourhoods and boost local activities at night.
Nigeria is subject to severe climatic constraints with a hot and humid season followed by a very dry season where temperatures can exceed 40°C. This factor results in a real challenge for streetlights installed in direct sunlight as they need to be able to bear heavy charge and discharge cycles.
Initially, 70 basic solar streetlights were installed. Made in China, these were equipped with lead-acid batteries. Two months after their installation, 30% of the products were defective and only after 6 months of operation, nearly 50% of products had to be replaced.
The solution
70 Sunna Design streetlights from the UP2 range have now been installed in the Durumi district to replace low-end products.
The lighting which is now in place, is more powerful and now lasts all night. It illuminates a wider area thanks to Sunna’s technology, power and product quality.
The Total Cost of Ownership is much lower with a product from Sunna Design. Over a 10-year period, there will be no additional costs linked with either maintenance or replacements, which makes Sunna’s solutions very competitive in the long term in comparison with low-end products.
