Custom Solar Lighting around the King Abdulaziz Center for World Culture
The King Abdulaziz Center for World Culture, a new cultural center inaugurated in December 2017, is located in Dharan with a total facility size of 100 000 m2. This was a large scale global project with a specific and atypical design conceived by the Norwegian agency Snøhetta. This new cultural landmark includes a wide range of cultural facilities with a theatre, cinema, an art gallery and a library containing around 250 000 books on open access.
During the construction phase of the King Abdulaziz for World Culture, Sunna Design was approached to bring its expertise with the creation of a custom solar lighting solution.
Sunna Design worked very closely with the team of architects and project owners to come up with a solution which was in conformity with their demands in terms of quality and finish for the entire facility.
A tailor-made lighting solution which matched the design of the building was conceived and developed to deliver powerful and reliable solar lighting around the site. The lighting system comprised 1 000 items to provide a professional and high quality solar lighting around the whole facility.
In order to address the project’s specific needs, 1 000 solar lighting benches were made to measure and installed on several miles, based on a design brief which was particularly meticulous and demanding in terms of security, reliability and aesthetic.
Various bespoke studies were conducted as part of the project, with independent research entities, to analyse the system and its efficiency.
Another in-depth study was also carried out on thermal management to optimize the durability and the sustainability of this tailor-made lighting solution.
